Sibelius Scorch This website uses Sibelius Scorch, the free software which lets you view, play and print music on the internet.

The first time you view or print some music you will need to download the latest version of Scorch. This is a quick and easy process that the system will guide you through.

Windows Internet Explorer users

When prompted, just click 'Yes/Install' twice and Scorch will be automatically installed as an ActiveX control. The page of music should then appear.

Windows XP users may have the downloading of ActiveX controls blocked, in which case a yellow bar will appear below the address bar stating "This site might require the following ActiveXcontrol: 'Sibelius Scorch' from 'Sibelius Software Limited'. Click here to install ...". You will need to click on the yellow bar and select 'Install ActiveX control', then click 'Yes/Install' twice to begin the installation.

If Scorch fails to start installing, this could be because you have ActiveX controls disabled in your security settings. There is more information on our system requirements page explaining how to enable ActiveX controls.

Failing this, if Scorch will still not install as an ActiveX control, you can install the software manually using the Scorch installer. Follow the instructions below for Mac/Netscape/Firefox users.

Mac/Netscape/Firefox users

Click on the link marked Click here to get Scorch near the bottom of the music window, and follow the instructions to install Scorch if you do not already have it. PLEASE NOTE: it is imperative that you tick the box to 'Manually Choose Browser Directory' at the start of the installation, and navigate to the specific plugins folder.

Windows users running MSN Messenger 7 during the installation process may find that the Scorch installer fails to complete and stops responding. Try closing MSN Messenger first (right click on the Messenger icon in the system tray, select 'Exit'), and then re-running the Scorch installer.

Will Scorch work on my computer?  back to top

To order from dots 4 strings, your system will need to be configured to allow cookies, ActiveX (Windows Internet Explorer users only) and Javascript. Click here for specific system requirements.

I click on 'view score' but no pop-up window appears  back to top

This is probably due to your pop-up blocker options. Visit the system requirements page for details of how to change your settings.

The 'view score' pop-up window contains no music  back to top

This means that you do not have Sibelius Scorch correctly installed. See the instructions above.

I have to 'Press SPACEBAR or ENTER' each time I view a score  back to top

This applies to Windows XP users only running Internet Explorer. Each time a score is viewed the system prompts 'Press SPACEBAR or ENTER to activate and use this control'. Alternatively, click anywhere on the music. This is now the default behaviour for all ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer.

I can only view the first page of the score  back to top

Before you have purchased a particular title you may only see a sample of the music. This is the first page of the score. Once you have bought an item you may see and hear it in full from your 'my music' login.

The sound stops before the end of the music displayed  back to top

Before you have purchased a particular title you may only hear a sample of the music. This is typically 30 seconds in length. Once you have bought an item you may see and hear it in full from your 'my music' login.

What size of paper should I print on?  back to top

Our music has been designed to print at its best in either A4 or Letter format. In the Print dialogue box there is a 'Fit to paper' option which is turned on by default. This will automatically scale the music to fit on whatever paper is in your printer. Make sure that the actual paper in the printer tray matches the size specifed in the Print dialogue box.

What paper will give the best results?  back to top

We recommend that your music is printed on 90gsm or 100gsm A4/Letter bright white paper.

What sort of printer do I need?  back to top

Any inkjet or laser printer will print the music nicely. In the unlikely event that you still have a dot-matrix printer, we do not recommend you use this.

I have bought several copies of a piece but only one copy prints  back to top

On some printer drivers there is a collate option which will default to on when the number of copies to print is greater than one. If you have purchased mulitple copies of a piece, turn this option off when the print dialogue box appears, otherwise you will only get a single copy.

The Scorch transpose feature is not available  back to top

We have carefully chosen the keys for each piece. Techniques such as double stopping would become difficult or impossible if the transpose feature was enabled.

When I close a 'view score' or 'test print' window an error pops up  back to top

If, after closing a Scorch window, you are presented with an error message saying 'Error Deleting File or Folder. Cannot delete xxx: There has been a sharing violation. The source or destination file may be in use.' - click OK to acknowledge the error. This occasionally happens when Scorch is trying to delete a temporary file. If the problem persists, shut down and re-open your browser.
